Dystopian Film Series Introduction:
A dystopia is a broken society characterized by misery and dehumanization. This could be the result of oppressive governmental control, an over-reliance on technology, environmental or economic catastrophes, or nuclear war and fallout.
Dystopian fiction began as a response to Utopian literature – works that imagine a perfect society. The genre has since become a pillar of science fiction, with famous authors and filmmakers embracing the aesthetic.
The films in this series are some of the best in the genre. I hope you will join us in appreciating these works for the classics they are.
Dystopian Film Series Listing & Screening Dates:
You can review the trailers via IMDB below each film listing.
Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 -
Blade Runner (1982)
Based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? This Techno-noir follows Deckard as he eliminates replicants in a Los Angeles ravaged by ecological destruction. The question of whether society is deeply unjust in its treatment of replicants emerges as the theme of the film.
Tuesday, September 13th, 2022 -
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Perhaps Stanley Kubrick’s best film. A Clockwork Orange is set in a near future world where youth violence is at an extreme. This satire deals with behaviorism and whether humans can change.
Tuesday, November 8th, 2022 -
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
In this Cold War paranoia film, humor and hijinks abound as the USA and Soviet Union come to the brink of nuclear war. Another masterpiece by Kubrick, the film features the legendary Peter Sellers in multiple roles
Tuesday, December 13th, 2022 -
Brazil (1985)
An update on George Orwell’s 1984, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil focuses on a government bureaucracy that is out of control. Satirical and terrifying, Brazil was released only after a legal battle between Gilliam and Universal Studios.
January 10th, 2023 - Alphaville (1965)
Jean-Luc Godard’s blend of dystopia and film-noir shows a computer that controls everything in Alphaville. Featuring Anna Karina and a great Eddie Constantine, the film imagines a World devoid of poetry, emotion, or love. The film is a warning against too much technological control.
** February 7th, 2023 - JFK (1991)
Doors @ 5:30PM Film @ 6:00PM - (early screening start due to length of film).
In Oliver Stone’s take on the Kennedy assassination all is not what it seems. Who was behind the murder? Will we ever know for sure? The film is full of what ifs and speculative theories about who was ultimately behind the assassination, and what that means for American democracy.
