Artist Statement:

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy,
the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.
— C.S Lewis

I have battled trauma, abuse, drug use and mental illness from an early age, and have wielded my imagination as my sword and shield. As difficult as things could be or would become, there was always somewhere ‘else’ I could go and this was made abundantly clear to me after my mother gifted me my first version of the Chronicles of Narnia as a child. I could find peace in the pages of a well written book and friends in the familiar characters, reading until the binding came undone and the pages had to be stuffed back in and held together with tape. These other worlds crafted by authors that came long before me afforded me the escape and comfort I needed during the most trying times of my life and oftentimes felt more like home than my place here on Earth ever could. This exhibit is my way of giving thanks to them and those who made these stories accessible to me from an early age, as without them I am uncertain I’d be here to share anything like this with you today. Folklore and fairytales will always be an integral part of my being and the greatest muse I could ask for, and I will endeavor to bring out the magic in our world until I am gone.

Artist Bio:

Alexis Tauterouff is a published photographer of digital and film mediums, utilizing both forms to create fantastical images with an essence of something otherworldly. Taking inspiration from the works of writers such as C.S Lewis and J.R.R Tolkein and combining it with the spiritual pagan roots of her ancestry, she aims to evoke a sensation of nostalgia for another place and time. She has worked her way through many mediums to ultimately settle upon photography as her preferred form of expression, paying homage to the artists and authors that afforded her comfort during an oftentimes tumultuous youth. Although she has no formal training in the art of photography, she accredits friend and colleague Tara Monaco and life partner Eric Eckman for the encouragement and tutelage necessary to set her on this path to creative fulfillment and success, as well as the artists in her family who came before her.
