Artist Statement:

I like to photograph and think about buildings and architecture for several reasons. Partly I think we do not always take the time to appreciate the wooden and concrete structures that form the infrastructure of our social world, and how those two things influence each other. Additionally, parallel and leading lines, and their convergence and disruptions tickle my brain in a weird way, playing with perspective and vanishing points are fun. I like to imagine them stretching into infinity, which is especially interesting with brutalist architecture.

Drawing and painting buildings has taught me a very important life lesson. As you can see with some of the pen and ink drawings, I got very particular and granular about details, literally using architectural tools to get the lines right. It was a great outlet for hyperfixating. However, sometimes that is exhausting and things would go unfinished, or I would have a fit of frustration as I struggled to make sure everything was neat and perfect. With the paintings, I let go a little and did not focus so hard on ensuring linear perfection. No one will really notice if things are a few degrees off, and I still liked how they turned out, and I did not work myself into a frenzy doing so.

I try to remember this when I have bouts of intense anxiety and I am fretting over making sure I am conducting myself perfectly, and tying myself in knots about not screwing something up and letting people down. Let go, the lines will never be laser-perfect, but they can still create a lovely image and the process will be more relaxed and enjoyable.
