Artist Statement:
Colette Chermak (b. 2001, Binghamton, NY) is a multimedia artist who reinterprets the everyday experience. She documents the sublime, overwhelming beauty of a moment, reflecting on the immediacy, ephemerality, and fragility of nature; she reimagines the mundane, manipulating classic techniques to create illusory scenes. Using photography, painting, and found materials, Chermak employs a variety of filters – some inherent to technology, others of her own design – within her work, disrupting traditional perception of the world. In her pursuit of the ‘fleeting moment,’ Chermak contemplates vulnerability of the self, interpersonal relationships, and confronts the wider conflict between environmental destruction and human demise.
