Artist Statement:

It wasn't until June 2021 that I had traveled further west beyond New York's western border. Slung back in coach seats, crouching over observation car tables –– this past year I have watched the continent blur underneath me.

Shooting film came as an accident almost three years ago, months before the pandemic slowed us all down. The process and the growth for me in analog photography has been appropriately glacial. Amongst all the chaos that surrounds us, there have been few things as grounding as the impression of the world through a viewfinder or the window of a cab being pulled by a locomotive.

Appreciation for the lever sticking twice before finally advancing the spool. For letting an overnight train be your accommodation. For clothes carrying the scent of developer well after the darkroom. For Midwestern grandmothers approaching you to get a better look at a camera they haven't seen in fifty years. For holding onto the dear people, places, and memories you come across when you feel so passionately that you can't help but throw yourself at the world.

This exhibition is an appreciation for the act of observation, as well as the rails that provided me the opportunity to do it all over this land.
